Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees up to 10 m tall.

Stems: Young branches ca. 2 mm in diameter toward apex, sericeous–puberulent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades ovate to lanceolate or elliptic, (3–)6.5–11.5 cm long, (1.5–)3.5–7 cm wide. Apex acute to acuminate. Base obtuse to rounded, subcordate, or rarely acute. Surfaces glabrous except lower surfaces sparsely appressed pubescent on midrib and secondary nerves, domatia present as depressions in axils of secondary nerves; blades chartaceous to subcoriaceous. Margins entire. Secondary veins 5–8 on each side of midrib, often reddish pellucid. Petioles 5–15 mm long. Stipules deltate to lanceolate, valvate in bud, 3–5 mm long, 2-4 mm wide, abruptly acuminate, upper surface villous, lower surface appressed sericeous.

Flowers: Flowers (staminate and perfect) 3–7 in cymes, peduncles 6-25 mm long, ca. 1 mm wide; pistillate flowers solitary or rarely 2–3 in cymes, peduncles 8-20(-35) mm long. bracts and bracteoles inconspicuous. Flowers insect-pollinated, bisexual (perfect) or functionally unisexual, 4(5)-merous, often heterostylous. Calyx limb persistent in fruit. Staminate and perfect flowers: calyx limb cupular, broadly lobed, the tubular portion 2–3 mm long, pubescent, the lobes foliaceous, imbricate, often reflexed, often unequal, 2–6 mm long, 2–7mm wide, obtuse to broadly rounded, pubescent; Pistillate flowers: calyx limb as in staminate flowers. Corolla greenish to yellowish or sometimes white. Staminate and perfect flowers: corolla salverform, the tube 5–11 mm long, 1.2–2 mm wide, appressed pubescent externally, subglabrous within, the lobes ovate, ca. 3 mm long and wide, obtuse; Pistillate flowers: corolla salverform, the tube 5–7 mm long, up to 1.5 mm wide. Nectary disk usually present. Staminate and perfect flowers: stamens as many as an alternate with the corolla lobes, inserted below corolla throat; anthers sessile, ca. 3.5 mm long, ca. 0.5 mm wide; Pistillate flowers staminodia subsessile, ca. 1.5 mm long, ca. 0.5 mm wide. Ovary inferior, occasionally partly so, or very rarely superior (pistillate flowers), up to 3.5 mm long, 5–6–celled; style 4–7 mm long, densely pubescent; stigmas 5–6, linear, slightly unequal, 1.3–2.5 mm long, exserted, lobed or capitate, dry or occasionally wet. Staminate and perfect flowers: ovary usually abortive, up to 3 mm long, 2–3–celled; style subterete, 3–4.5 mm long, appressed strigillose; stigmas 2–3, equal or unequal, ca. 0.6 mm long.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; purplish to black; subglobose; 6–10 mm in diameter; sparsely pubescent; pyrenes (2–)5–6; thick–walled; 1–seeded. Seeds without endosperm.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Dry to mesic forest and on open; sparsely vegetated lava flow.

Elevation Range: 100–1220 m.
